Theology and Steak

Meat for the Mind, Body, and Soul

  • Theology and Steak?

So what is Theology and Steak? It is a Jesus Christ-centered blog from a person whose heart is burdened more and more by a need to evangeize those actually in the church. The name came from my desire to teach simple meat and potatoes theology, and was born out of two things that have happened in my life: One was the frustration at many chuches, at least from my own experience, that are light on doctrine and theology and big on entertainment and felt needs. The second thing was a discovery of the doctrines of grace and the five solas of the Reformation. Scripture alone, grace alone, faith alone, Christ alone, and to the Glory of God alone. Much of this blog will come from my experiences, analyses, and thoughts. Please feel free to comment. Soli Deo Gloria

Biblical Ignorance

Posted by theologyandsteak on March 4, 2008

Barack Obama, one of the Democratic candidates for that party’s nomination for the Presidency, responded Sunday to a question posed by a pastor about Obama’s views on homosexuality.  Obama stated, “I don’t think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state,” said Obama. “If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans.”  This is a clear instance of someone who claims to be a Christian not knowing what the Bible says or what in the world he is really talking about.  After making statements supporting abortion and homosexual marriage, Obama stated,

“In terms of my faith, there has been so much confusion that has been deliberately perpetrated through emails and so forth, so here are the simple facts,” he said. “I am a Christian. I am a devout Christian. I have been a member of the same church for 20 years, pray to Jesus every night, and try to go to church as much as I can when they are not working me. Used to go quite often. These days, we haven’t been at the home church–I haven’t been home on Sunday–for several months now. So, my faith is important to me. It is not something that I try to push on other people. But it is something that helps to guide my life and my values.”

Obama is a politician and is pandering for votes, but he is doing that at the expense of basic Biblical knowledge.  He claims to be a Christian, but his words indicate that he does not have the slightest notion of what Christianity is about.  This is an instance of a high-profile public official doing the same thing that many other “professing” Church-goers do.  They claim to be Christians, use much of the lingo, phrases, and names, but use them out of context though in such a way as to look like a Christian, feel good about themselves, and appear credible to other gullible people, but in fact are nothing more than confused at best, or liars at worst.

The “obscure” passage Obama refers to is founding Romans 1, in the section from verses 18 through 32 regarding God’s wrath against the rebellious and ungodly, and the consequences of their rebellion as manifested in their lives.  You can read my commentary on this section here and here.  Essentially, though, Paul’s argument goes something like this:  God, as creator, has placed knowledge of Himself in every person’s mind, since we are all created in His image.  However, man is rebellious and sets himself up as god, in order to run life his way instead of being reverent, submissive, and honoring to God.  Man in his rebellion suppresses this knowledge, and therefore has no excuse when the time comes for God to hold him accountable for his rebellion through the execution of His holy wrath.  Because man dishonors God, so God allows man to dishonor himself.  How does He do that?  Let’s read.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.  Romans 1:24 – 27.

God allowed man to dishonor himself through homosexual acts that are contrary to nature, that are shameless, and dishonorable.  Homosexuality is neither natural, nor honorable.  It is detestable in the sight of God, just like any other sin such as lying, stealing, gossip, and others.  Many of these are listed in Romans 1:28 – 32.  This is not an obscure passage, but it is very clear in its meaning, and at the beginning of one of the most well-known books of the Bible.  Hardly obscure.

The Sermon on the Mount is another story for another day, but his misinterpretation is just as bad.  Using the term doesn’t mean that one knows anything about its contents, unfortunately.

Obama, like many other professing Christians in this country, claim adamantly to be a devout Christian, yet hold ideas and views that are clearly contrary to clear Biblical teaching.  No one is perfect, and all Christians do this to some extent, because we are depraved and imperfect human beings.  That said, when the Biblical texts are clear on certain things such as lying, stealing, and homosexuality, then Christians must yield their own views to those of the Bible.  The Holy Scriptures are for Christians God one and only revelation to mankind about everything associated with faith and life.  Yes, faith AND life!  True Christians are not perfect, but they are submissive to the Word of God out of love and devotion and holy reverence.  Much of what the Bible teaches is contrary to the current cultural shift and direction, but Christians are not called to be mirrors of the culture, but to be doers of the Word.  To be Doers of the Word, one first must be thinkers of the Word!

Christians do not need to judge the world for doing things that are completely in line with the world.  Those who are not followers of Christ only do what is in accordance with their nature.  That is why Christians must not judge the world for doing wrong in one sense, because they are only doing what comes natural to depraved man.  Yes, God put His Word and His law in the hearts of all people, and that is why in the end they will have no excuse when they stand before a Holy God.  However, once one claims to be a follower of Christ, a Christian, then it is required of other Christians to rebuke, correct, encourage, and teach each other in the ways of the Lord.  Once Obama declared himself to be a devout follower of Christ, he automatically opened himself up to judgment by fellow Christians according to the Word of God.  Now, again, this judgment should be done in love.  Rebuke and correction are not to be done in a hateful manner, but done to correct the Christian when his path is obviously contrary to Biblical teaching.  A Christian is by definition under the submission to the authority of God through His Word, and under those of authority around him, including brothers and sisters in Christ.

When one claims to be a Christian, and holds views that are clearly counter the Word of God, then that person needs to be corrected.  If they submit and repent to the correction, then we can all praise God because the brother or sister has been restored.  However, if they are unrepentant and rebellious, and all other disciplinary action such is stated in the Bible is ineffective, then that person must be put out of the fellowship.  They must be held accountable.  Obama, for instance, by publically holding and professing views counter to Biblical Christianity, is either confused about what it really means to be a Christian, or is blatantly deceitful.  Unfortunately, he is like many others in the visible church that say one thing, and do something or think something else.

The greater point is this.  I believe that the visible church is in need to strong and Biblical exhortation and teaching that holds Christians accountable to the Word of God.  Many people who profess to be Christians really have no idea what that means.  Most of them do not know the grand overarching story of the Bible, and why Christ had to come, what sin is, and why God will judge those that are unrepentant.  Most people who make silly statements like Obama are, I believe, truly deceived because they have not been taught what Christianity really is.  They have a false notion that Christianity is a social cause, or the gospel is love your neighbor.  I have heard that the gospel is the same as the golden rule.  When pastors and teachers do not teach the Word of God in all of its glory, and perhaps even hold false notions themselves, they breed sheep that may think they are in the fold, when indeed they are outside of it.  This is the case with many in the churches of this country today.  It is sad, and troubling.  Eternity for many is at stake here.  Obama’s comments should be a clarion call not against homosexuality itself or some political cause, but to a greater understanding and call to accountability of Christians to the Bible as the Word of God.

  1. Obscure passage in Romans? A simple reading invokes clear images of homosexuality to me. What is his supposed justification from the Sermon on the Mount? Just to love one another? If so, his doctrine is a house of cards. You’re absolutely right, though. Because he claims to be a Christian, he has opened himself up to public rebuke by good Bereans who have searched the scriptures and found his doctrine wanting.
FYI – the links to your commentary in paragraph 4 are not active.

Wasn’t Paul totally crazy? He basically invented christianity.
If you want to teach about the Bible, why not teach about its internal contradictions, the history of how it came to be and who wrote what and when?

    • No Prayers for Obama

Obama is not a natural US born citizen and therefore got this election through trickery and coercion. He is not my president, only in name.

    http://moniquemonicat.wordpress.com/obama-proof-he-was-born-in-kenya-fake-birth-certificate/

Obama used the name of Jesus Christ to try to get the Christians to vote for him and he used a photo op at the Holy Wailing Wall in Jerusalem to get the Jewish vote. For 20 years he attended a “church” where the pastor cursed and used God’s name in vain from the pulpit, to get the black vote. In my opinion, he might as well of used the “F” word in the “sanctuary,” which I’m sure he has anyway, just never got on tape. And it is very clear about how he and Obama feel about Israel and the Jews.

Besides the fact that wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit which Obama doesn’t himself possess; if I am to follow your logic, then am I to assume you’d also instruct the German Christians back in Hitler’s day to pray for the “wisdom and safety of Adolf Hitler? For me to pray for the safety and wisdom of the AntiChrist as well? Brothers and sisters, it’s time to check yourselves on that one.

However, there are far more scriptures in complete contrast to praying for a monster like Obama. I don’t recall Jesus calling for prayer for Caesar, Herod, or even Judas for that matter. Peter did not pray for Ananias and Saphira who came to him with a lie on their lips; and the early Christians did not pray for Nero’s safety and wisdom. In fact, Jesus said He only prays for the ones that the Father has given him, those who’s names are in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

AND I DON’T RECALL JOHN THE BAPTIST PRAYING FOR HEROD: NO, QUITE THE CONTRARY, HE SAT OUTSIDE HEROD’S GATES AND DECLARED TO HIM AND THE WORLD THAT HEROD WAS IN VIOLATION OF GOD’S LAW AGAINST ADULTERY.
AND HE GOT HIS HEAD CHOPPED OFF FOR IT.

Jesus said John the Baptist was the greatest man that ever lived.

Now we have a man Obama that supports infanticide, homosexual marriage, Islam (praying to the moon god, which YWH forbids), racially divided churches, and splitting the land of Israel: all of which is far greater sin than Herod marrying his brother’s wife. This man Obama is not only worshiped as deity, but accepts and enjoys the adoration and worship; adoration and worship which belongs only to God. He promised to enact the HATE CRIMES BILL which will pretty much make it illegal for Christians to speak the full Word of God in regards to homosexuality, Islam, and other sins God forbids. Perhaps as time goes on it will be a crime to even speak out against Obama. And you’re asking me to pray for safety, wisdom, and discernment for someone who is actively engaging in and promoting the very things GOD HATES?

I hope Christian people will read more of their bible instead of hide behind one scripture that was never intended to lull Christians to remain quiet in the face of sin and wrongdoing. Especially when truth and the very name of YWH and our Lord Jesus Christ is trampled on. Paul also said women should keep their head covered, yet you’re not emailing any such request. And any Christian that asks me to pray for Obama or Hitler or anyone who accepts worship and adoration as a god, rather than to give YWH God the glory, is asking me to participate in a sin.

We are a perverse nation with perverse ideals and morals and a very sick society, and we have far surpassed anything of Rome in Jesus’ Day.

We would be better served if Christian people sounded the alarm, rather than calmed Christian’s valid concerns about one of the most evil men to come to power in a long time: Obama.

I will pray Romans 8:19-21 for the Sons of God to be revealed. But I will take back my blessing from Obama and this country and shake the dust from my feet on the way out, as the bible instructs us to do for those who will not accept the gospel.

Remember: if Christians lose their salt, what good are we?

And for the record, there will be no “regrouping” of the worldly Republican Party in 4 years. Don’t you get it? There won’t be an opportunity to do a “retake,” the republicans already blew it. God is not our puppet, He asked, we said no as a country and that is that.

I’d like to urge Christians to stand against sin, not sit and beg unbelievers like Bill Maher to come to the truth about God. It is beneath any child of the King to do so. The fields are ripe and we have much more important harvest work to do than waste our time on pruning a bad tree that refuses to give forth fruit.

As far as I’m concerned Obama is the son of perdition. What other world leader accepts and thrives on the type of adoration and worship being bestowed upon him? That is worship and adoration that belongs only to God, not Obama.

I even remember Obama’s pastor being introduced as “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” on national TV. Yet, it is so sad you did not speak up about that. In fact, I am not aware of any “church leaders” that did either. And now you’re asking us to pray for a monster who wants us to call him the Messiah?

    I don’t think so.

Barack Obama Anti-Christ In His Own Words:
“A light will shine down from somewhere, it will light upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will say to yourself, “I have to vote for Barack.” -Barack Husein Obama, Lebanon, New Hampshire, January 2008

    dictionary results for: “epiphany”
    e⋅piph⋅a⋅ny
    –noun, plural -nies.
    1. a Christian festival, observed on January 6, commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles in the persons of the Magi; Twelfth-day.
    2. an appearance or manifestation, esp. of a deity.

American Christians are getting really flabby. They are actually calling on others to pray for safety and wisdom for a monster like Obama, a reprobate? Well, y’all can continue to delude yourselves and call good “evil,” and evil “good.” Anything you can do to kick back, pretend, and do and say nothing, so you can go about your worldly life earning respect from man. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, even when that means using the muscles in our mouths to declare the truth, even at the risk of jail or even being ridiculed. I’d take eternity in heaven for remaining faithful, over hell any day.

God is not mocked. And each one of you will stand before Him and give an account of everything you did and said in this short life, even for what you did not do.

Our time would be better spent to do the things Jesus asked us to do: heal the sick by laying on of hands, feed the poor [widows, orphans, and those who truly cannot work like disabled folks], clothe the naked, cast out demons, spread the gospel, pray for Jerusalem, and love our brothers and sisters in the faith including the Jewish people. That is where our prayers should rest. Not on some egomaniac, narcissist and power-hungry antichrist Obama.

Yes, we are told to pray for our enemies [in a neighborly sense], but that doesn’t include Obama or Hitler or any other “instead-of-Messiah” who comes on the scene. And as we learn from Peter, as mentioned above, it doesn’t include bold-faced liars either.

Christian Leaders, you’d be better off asking us to pray WE have the strength, faith, wisdom, discernment, and courage to stand against all Obama and his regime are going to slam down our throats during his “reign.” That we stand firm, remain faithful to Jesus and his commandments in these times. And yes, even if it means being jailed for speaking up for Jesus. Something American Christians know nothing about, but will VERY SOON.

Don’t you get it? God has left the building as far as America is concerned. It’s on. And you had better be prepared to give your life in resistance to what our new administration is asking us to do and/or worshiping Obama antichrist.

Remember: St. Paul said cowards will not enter the gates of heaven.

So my recommendation to you teachers, pastors and Church leaders is to do your job! Stand up with courage, remain faithful to God’s Word and lead your flocks! Prepare them, get them ready to give their very lives for the gospel and the commandments of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and stop instructing us to close our eyes to what lies before us! We as believers NEED TO BE PREPARED.

Because this man Obama does NOT have good intentions for America, nor Christians, Jews, nor Israel. Period, end of story.

    PLEASE WARN THE CHURCH:
